In late-eighteenth-century Denmark, the young British-born queen Caroline Mathilde is married to the mentally unstable King Christian VII. About

Nikolaj Arcel's A Royal Affair (2012) is a Danish historical drama that turns one of the strangest episodes in Scandinavian royal history into a sweeping study of power, reason and desire. A co-production drawing on Danish, Swedish, Czech and German resources, it premiered in competition at the Berlinale, where it won Silver Bears for Best Screenplay and for the debut actor Mikkel Boe Følsgaard, and went on to a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The film stars Alicia Vikander, in the role that brought her to international attention, as Caroline Mathilde, the English-born queen trapped in a loveless marriage to the erratic Christian VII (Følsgaard). Mads Mikkelsen plays Johann Friedrich Struensee, the German doctor whose Enlightenment convictions give him extraordinary influence over the court. Arcel directs with painterly restraint, his candlelit interiors and muted palette evoking a kingdom poised between the old order and the ideas that would soon convulse Europe, while the performances keep the intimate drama burning beneath the period grandeur.

Widely praised on release for its intelligence and emotional weight, the film cemented Mikkelsen's standing as one of Europe's finest actors and announced Vikander as a major talent some years before her own Academy Award. It belongs to a strong tradition of Danish prestige cinema that treats history as a stage for moral argument, and remains among the most accomplished European costume dramas of its decade — handsome, literate and quietly devastating.
