The Secret of the Grain
La Graine et le mulet
An ageing Tunisian immigrant, laid off from the shipyard in a southern French port, stakes everything on a dream: to open a couscous restaurant on a refurbished boat with his sprawling, fractious extended family. As the launch night approaches, long-running tensions, debts and rivalries threaten to capsize the whole enterprise.
About
Abdellatif Kechiche's The Secret of the Grain (2007) swept the Césars, winning Best Film and Best Director, and took a Special Jury Prize at Venice. A vivid, immersive portrait of a North African immigrant family in the south of France, it confirmed Kechiche — later the Palme d'Or-winning director of Blue Is the Warmest Colour — as a major chronicler of contemporary French life.
Habib Boufares plays Slimane, the weary patriarch whose restaurant dream becomes the family's collective gamble, with Hafsia Herzi as his fiercely loyal stepdaughter in a breakout performance. Kechiche shoots in long, densely peopled scenes of overlapping talk — boisterous family meals, fraught negotiations — that immerse the viewer in the rhythms and pressures of working-class immigrant life. The film's extended, near-unbearable final stretch, built around the restaurant's chaotic opening night, became famous for its sustained tension.
Critics hailed its energy, its authenticity and its refusal of cliché, and it has since been recognised as one of the key French films of its decade. Sprawling, intimate and emotionally exhausting in the best sense, The Secret of the Grain turns a modest tale of a family business into an epic of dignity, labour and belonging. It is a landmark of twenty-first-century French cinema. Hafsia Herzi's breakout performance and the film's near-unbearable final stretch became instantly celebrated, and it stands as one of the defining works of twenty-first-century French cinema.
