Balandrau: Where the Fierce Wind Blew

Fernando Trullols reconstructs the Balandrau tragedy of 30 December 2000, when a sudden blizzard caught several groups of walkers on a 2,585-metre peak in the Ripollès and killed ten people — the worst mountain accident in Catalan history. The film is in Catalan, shot largely on the mountain, and released in 2026.

Álvaro Cervantes, Marc Martínez, Bruna Cusí and Anna Moliner lead an ensemble split between the climbers and the rescue teams working in conditions that grounded helicopters for most of the first day. Trullols stages the ascent in clear weather at length before the turn, which is the film's central decision: the disaster arrives as weather does, without warning or narrative preparation.

Survival cinema lives or dies on whether the physical detail convinces, and the production shot in real winter conditions to get it. For a catalogue with plenty of Spanish drama and almost no Catalan-language genre filmmaking, it is also a useful corrective — and it belongs beside The 12th Man as the other great European film about being outside in weather that wants to kill you.
