Chicken Run
A Yorkshire chicken farm run like a POW camp is getting an upgrade to a pie machine, and the hens need to fly out before the pastry goes in. Aardman's first feature, stop-motion prison-break comedy with an English-seaside heart.
About
Peter Lord and Nick Park's Chicken Run opened in 2000 and was Aardman Animations' first feature film, made through a co-production deal with DreamWorks. The film became, on opening, the highest-grossing stop-motion animated feature ever made (a record it held for over a decade) and consolidated Aardman's transition from a Bristol short-film studio (Wallace and Gromit, Creature Comforts) into a major international animation production house.
A Yorkshire chicken farm in the late 1950s is run like a Stalag prisoner-of-war camp by the imperious Mrs Tweedy (Miranda Richardson) and her dim-witted husband (Tony Haygarth). The hens (led by the determined Ginger (Julia Sawalha)) have been tunnelling escape attempts for years; when Mrs Tweedy receives a brochure for a new chicken-pie machine, the timeline becomes critical. The arrival of an American Rhode Island Red rooster called Rocky (Mel Gibson), who claims to be able to teach them to fly, changes the strategic calculus.
The film operates simultaneously as parody of British World War II prison-camp films (The Great Escape, Stalag 17, The Wooden Horse) and as broad family entertainment. Aardman's stop-motion craft (every frame moved by hand by a team of animators across more than two years of production) produced one of the most distinctive visual registers in mainstream animated feature filmmaking. The 2023 sequel Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, with most of the cast replaced, was a Netflix release; the 2000 original remains the canonical entry.
