Hard Truths

Mike Leigh · UK / Spain · 2024

London, present day. Pansy lives in a spotless suburban house with her plumber husband Curtley and their adult son Moses, but the slightest disturbance (a passing dog, a checkout queue, a cousin's invitation) sends her into a corrosive rage. Her sister Chantelle, a warm Brixton hairdresser, keeps trying to draw the family back together as Mother's Day approaches. The film tracks a few weeks in their north and south London lives, observing the cost that Pansy's anger inflicts on those closest to her.

About

Mike Leigh's Hard Truths premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024 and screened at the New York Film Festival the following month, with Bleecker Street handling the North American release. It marks Leigh's first contemporary-set feature since Another Year (2010) and his first reunion with Marianne Jean-Baptiste since Secrets & Lies (1996), the Palme d'Or winner that earned her an Oscar nomination. The production is a UK/Spain co-production developed in Leigh's customary improvisational rehearsal process.

Jean-Baptiste leads as Pansy, opposite Michele Austin as her warmer sister Chantelle and David Webber as her quiet plumber husband Curtley. The film is shot by Dick Pope, Leigh's regular cinematographer since Life Is Sweet (1991), in a restrained naturalist register that holds the camera close to faces. Gary Yershon's spare score appears only at the seams, leaving the dialogue (devised through months of in-character workshops) to carry the rhythm.

Critical reception was strong: Jean-Baptiste swept the New York, Los Angeles and National Society of Film Critics best-actress prizes, becoming the first Black actress to take all three in the same year. She received a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress and the film a nomination for Outstanding British Film. The Guardian, Sight & Sound and Cahiers du Cinéma all placed it among the year's notable films, and several critics described Pansy as the most fully realised Leigh creation in two decades.
