The Outrun

Nora Fingscheidt · UK / Germany · 2024

A young Scottish biologist returns from London to her parents' Orkney sheep farm to confront the alcoholism that's wrecking her life; based on Amy Liptrot's memoir; Saoirse Ronan in towering form.

About

Nora Fingscheidt's The Outrun premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024 and is the German director's third feature, after System Crasher (2019) and the Netflix English-language drama The Unforgivable (2021). The screenplay is by Fingscheidt and Amy Liptrot, with Liptrot adapting her own 2016 memoir of the same name — published by Canongate Books, winner of the Wainwright Prize for nature writing — into the screenplay format.

The lead, Saoirse Ronan, also produced the film through her Brouhaha Entertainment company alongside Liptrot and Fingscheidt; Ronan has been outspoken in interviews that the project's development was driven by her direct response to Liptrot's memoir over years of partial preparation. The Scottish location — Liptrot's actual childhood farm on the Orkney island of Papa Westray — was used as the principal shooting location, with the production employing locals in supporting roles and as crew across the unusually difficult winter shoot.

Cinematography is by Yunus Roy Imer, who had shot Fingscheidt's System Crasher, working in deliberately variable lighting conditions to match the seasonal Atlantic-island weather. The supporting cast includes Paapa Essiedu, Stephen Dillane, Saskia Reeves and Lauren Lyle. The film was nominated for Best British Independent Film at the BIFA 2024 ceremony, with multiple additional category nominations including Best Director and Best Actress for Ronan. Saoirse Ronan was widely tipped for an Oscar nomination but the campaign did not advance through the season.
