Bird
Bailey, twelve years old, lives in a battered squat in north Kent with her young father Bug and her half-brother Hunter. As Bug plans his hasty wedding to a new girlfriend and Hunter is drawn towards a vigilante gang of older boys, Bailey wanders the surrounding marshes with a phone camera. There she meets Bird, a soft-spoken stranger who has come to the area looking for the family he left behind.
About
Released in 2024, Bird is the sixth feature by British director Andrea Arnold, whose previous work includes Red Road, Fish Tank, American Honey and Cow. Co-produced by BBC Film, House Productions and MUBI, the film premiered in Competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Prix de la Citoyenneté. It went on to gather major nominations at the European Film Awards and the British Independent Film Awards.
The young Nykiya Adams, in her screen debut, plays Bailey, opposite Barry Keoghan as the mercurial young father Bug and Franz Rogowski as the gentle drifter Bird. Robbie Ryan, Arnold's long-time cinematographer, shoots in 1.50:1 with an alert handheld camera, scaling the battered estates and tidal marshes of north Kent to a child's eye-line. The film's soundtrack mixes British rave records and folk standards, and includes original work by Burial, the south London electronic producer making his first major film score contribution.
Reception was warm in the UK, where critics treated Bird as Arnold's strongest fictional work since Fish Tank, and her most fully felt portrait yet of a working-class English childhood. Continental reviewers were broadly positive about the film's blend of social realism with magical-realist textures, and Rogowski's performance was singled out across awards bodies. The film is now part of a well-established lineage of Arnold features about young women holding themselves together in places the state has largely abandoned.
