The Banshees of Inisherin
On a remote Irish island in 1923, Pádraic is stunned when his lifelong friend Colm abruptly ends their friendship, refusing to give any reason beyond no longer wishing to spend time with him. As Pádraic struggles to understand the rejection, Colm threatens to cut off one of his own fingers every time Pádraic attempts to speak to him, driving their feud to darkly absurdist and tragic extremes.
About
Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin reunited the director with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, the leads of his 2008 debut feature In Bruges. The film won Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival in 2022 and the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for Farrell at the same festival; it then dominated the BAFTAs the following year, winning Best British Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Barry Keoghan and Best Supporting Actress for Kerry Condon, with multiple additional nominations.
At the Golden Globes the film won Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Best Screenplay and Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Farrell. It earned nine Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor (twice, Gleeson and Keoghan) and Best Supporting Actress (Condon), although it converted none into wins at the ceremony itself.
The production was a co-production between Searchlight, Film4 and Blueprint Pictures. It was shot principally on Inishmore (the largest of the Aran Islands) and on Achill Island off the western coast of County Mayo across the autumn of 2021, in the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht; the deliberate use of two separate islands as a single fictional Inisherin was a McDonagh-Larkin production decision documented in interviews. Cinematography is by Ben Davis (a regular McDonagh collaborator) and the score is by Carter Burwell.
