Good Luck to You, Leo Grande
London. Nancy Stokes, a recently widowed retired RE teacher in her sixties, books a hotel room and the company of a young man who goes by the name Leo Grande. She has a list. Over a series of afternoon meetings the two of them negotiate what Nancy has come for, and discover rather more besides.
About
Sophie Hyde's Good Luck to You, Leo Grande had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2022 in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition, the Australian director's second feature, after 52 Tuesdays (2013), and her first film made in the United Kingdom. The screenplay is by Katy Brand, working in a register far removed from her comedy background. The production is by Film4 and Searchlight Pictures, who distributed the film theatrically in the UK in June 2022 and on Hulu in the United States.
Emma Thompson leads as Nancy Stokes (a performance of unusual physical candour) with Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders, Bad Sisters) as Leo Grande. The vast majority of scenes take place in a single London hotel room across four meetings; production designer Monica Latham uses the confined space to chart the shifting dynamic between the two characters with precision. Cinematography is by Bryan Mason; the score is by Stephen Rennicks.
The film holds a 93 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and received four BAFTA nominations at the 76th ceremony, including Best British Film and Best Actress for Thompson. Thompson also received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. Critical response in the UK and United States centred on Thompson's performance and on Brand's willingness to let the script's arguments carry their full weight without resolving them into something tidier than they are.
