Such Brave Girls

Kat Sadler · UK · 2023

Two sisters and their hapless single mother muddle through modern London with maximum chaos and minimum self-awareness. Kat Sadler's painfully funny BBC Three sitcom (produced by A24, directed by Simon Bird) turns mental illness, bad decisions, and family co-dependency into razor-sharp comedy.

About

Kat Sadler's Such Brave Girls launched on BBC Three in November 2023 and won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Scripted Comedy in 2024, an unusually rapid trajectory from debut commission to top scripted comedy honour. The show was developed for the BBC by A24, the American studio's first foray into UK comedy commissioning, and is directed by Simon Bird (best known on screen as Will McKenzie in The Inbetweeners).

Sadler herself stars alongside her real-life sister Lizzie Davidson, with Louise Brealey playing their mother and Paul Bazely the recurring stepfather figure. Casting two real sisters in the central roles was Sadler's structural decision, taken from the start of script development; many of the comedic rhythms in the show derive from material Sadler and Davidson had been workshopping for years before the BBC commission. The first series ran six episodes; a second six-episode series was commissioned and aired in late 2024.

The show belongs to the wave of contemporary British female-led comedy that includes Fleabag, This Way Up and I May Destroy You, but Sadler has been explicit in interviews about distancing it from Fleabag in particular, Such Brave Girls is more abrasive in tone, more morally compromised in its central characters, and pointedly less interested in narrative redemption arcs. It is now widely treated as one of the strongest British scripted comedy commissions of the 2020s.
