Paolo Sorrentino opened Venice in 2025 with his sixth collaboration with Toni Servillo, who took the Volpi Cup for it — the pair's most restrained work together since Il Divo, and a deliberate turn away from the baroque mode of The Great Beauty and Parthenope.
Servillo plays Mariano De Santis, President of the Republic, a devout widower six months from the end of his mandate, weighing two clemency petitions and a euthanasia law he does not want to sign. Anna Ferzetti plays his daughter and legal adviser, and much of the film is the two of them talking in the Quirinale's enormous quiet rooms. Daria D'Antonio shoots it in cold institutional light; the jokes are drier and further apart than usual.
Italian critics received it as Sorrentino's most classical film, and it drew the largest opening-weekend audience of his career at home — 3.75 on Letterboxd from 82,000 ratings. If the earlier films put you off with their flamboyance, this is the one to try: a chamber piece about conscience and the machinery of the state, carried by one of the great screen performances of the decade.
