Lockerbie: A Search for Truth

David Harrower · UK · 2025

On the evening of 21 December 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 from London Heathrow to New York is blown out of the sky over the Scottish town of Lockerbie. Among the 270 dead is twenty-three-year-old Flora Swire, the daughter of a Birmingham GP. The series follows Dr Jim Swire across the long years that follow as he turns himself, by stages, from a grieving father into one of the most prominent and inconvenient sceptics of the official investigation.

About

David Harrower's Lockerbie: A Search for Truth opened on Sky Atlantic and Peacock in January 2025 across five episodes, the Olivier-winning Scottish playwright's first long-form television commission, and the highest-profile dramatic treatment of the Pan Am 103 case since the 1990 mini-series The Tragedy of Flight 103. The series is adapted from Jim Swire and Peter Biddulph's joint memoir The Lockerbie Bombing: A Father's Search for Justice, with Swire himself as a consultant. The production is by Carnival Films (the makers of Downton Abbey) for Sky Studios and Peacock; direction is shared between Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders) and Jim Loach.

Colin Firth leads as Dr Jim Swire, alongside Catherine McCormack (Braveheart, Spy Game) as his wife Jane and Ardalan Esmaili (Border) as the convicted Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, whose conviction Swire has spent decades publicly disputing. Sam Troughton, Jemma Carlton, Harry Redding and Pippa Bennett-Warner round out the supporting cast. Cinematography is by Si Bell; the score is by Volker Bertelmann (All Quiet on the Western Front).

British and US critics were largely positive (The Guardian, The Telegraph and The Hollywood Reporter singled out Firth's controlled central performance) though the series drew careful response from victims' families and journalists who differ from Swire's reading of the evidence. The show is now part of the standard journalism-school curriculum on the case.
