Jimmy McGovern · UK · 2021

Jimmy McGovern's anthology drama enters Her Majesty's Prison Service from two sides. Series one follows Mark Cobden, a teacher beginning a four-year sentence after a fatal driving accident, and Eric McNally, a senior officer whose attempt to do his job decently is tested by a fellow inmate's threat against his son. Series two moves to a women's prison and three new arrivals: a single mother, a long-term lifer and a pregnant addict. McGovern, working with co-writer Helen Black, draws on years of research with current and former prisoners and officers.

About

Jimmy McGovern's Time launched on BBC One in June 2021, produced by BBC Studios with co-writer Helen Black and directed by Lewis Arnold. McGovern, the Liverpool dramatist behind Cracker, The Street and Accused, returned to the institutional-drama register that has defined much of his recent television, this time researched across two years of interviews with serving and former prisoners and officers. The first series, three episodes long, was followed by a second three-part series in October 2023 set in a women's prison, with new lead performers and a new ensemble.

Sean Bean plays Mark Cobden, a secondary-school English teacher beginning a four-year sentence for causing a fatal car accident while drink-driving; Stephen Graham plays Eric McNally, a senior prison officer whose son is at the mercy of a powerful inmate's family on the outside. Series two centres on three women entering Carlingford Prison together: Jodie Whittaker as Orla, jailed for unpaid energy-meter tampering, Tamara Lawrance as Abi, a long-term lifer, and Bella Ramsey as Kelsey, a pregnant young heroin user. The supporting cast across both series includes Siobhan Finneran, James Nelson-Joyce, Hannah Walters and Sue Johnston.

Bean won Best Actor at the 2022 BAFTAs and the first series won Best Mini-Series; the second series brought further BAFTA and Royal Television Society recognition for Lawrance and Ramsey. The combination of McGovern's uncompromising social-realist register with high-craft production placed Time alongside Adolescence and Boiling Point as some of the most singular British television of the early 2020s.
