About

Marie Antoinette premiered on Canal+ in France on 31 October 2022 and on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer on 29 December 2022. Created and written by Deborah Davis — the screenwriter behind Yorgos Lanthimos's The Favourite (2018) — the series is an eight-episode French-British co-production directed by Geoffrey Enthoven and produced by Capa Drama and Never Never Pictures. It marked Davis's first major television project and brought to a serialised format the revisionist sensibility that characterised her work on The Favourite: sympathy for the historical woman beneath the mythology.

German actress Emilia Schüle plays the title role, bringing a youthful intelligence to a figure more often reduced to symbol or caricature. Louis Cunningham plays the dauphin Louis, rendered with deliberate awkwardness rather than villainy, and James Purefoy commands the screen as Louis XV. Gaia Weiss plays Madame du Barry with unsettling directness. The production was shot on location at real châteaux in France and benefits from production design that prioritises texture and lived-in detail over the usual sheen of prestige period drama. The series is notably told in English — a deliberate choice that aligns it with the tradition of European co-productions intended for international audiences.

Critical reception was divided on release, with some critics finding the contemporary tone jarring and others welcoming it as a corrective to the hagiographic tradition. Variety listed it among its Best International Series of 2022. A second series aired in 2025 on Canal+, BBC, PBS, and Disney+. Seen in context, the show belongs to a cluster of 2020s European productions revisiting royal women's lives with post-The Crown rigour and feminist sensibility.
