About

Dougal Wilson's Paddington in Peru opened in 2024 as the third film of the live-action Paddington franchise. The film consolidated Wilson, after his earlier commercial-direction career, as a feature director taking over from Paul King (who remains attached to the franchise as producer). The film extends the broader Paddington franchise into a substantially more adventurous geographical register than the earlier two films had attempted.

Paddington heads home to Darkest Peru with the Browns in tow when Aunt Lucy goes missing from the Home for Retired Bears in the rural Andean countryside outside Cusco. The family (Henry (Hugh Bonneville), Mary (Emily Mortimer, replacing Sally Hawkins), and their now-teenage children) travel through the broader Peruvian rainforest and Andean-mountain environment in pursuit of Aunt Lucy and the broader Paddington-family-history-mystery the journey progressively uncovers. Olivia Colman plays the Reverend Mother of the Home for Retired Bears; Antonio Banderas plays the riverboat captain who provides the family's transport.

The film operates as broad family-adventure-comedy in a register that combines the Paddington-franchise tonal commitments with a substantially more conventional treasure-hunt-narrative structure. Erik Wilson's photography of the Peruvian rainforest and Andean exteriors produced one of the most visually distinctive recent family-film landscape registers. Ben Whishaw continues as the voice of Paddington across the franchise.
