Sex Education
Otis is the son of a famous sex therapist, mortified by and fluent in every conversation his mother has about desire. When his sharp-tongued classmate Maeve realises he can do the same for their schoolmates, they open an underground sex advice clinic. Netflix's British hit runs on the charm of its cast and the warmth of its sex-positive, queer-affirming take on adolescence, one of the most empathetic teen comedies ever made.
About
Laurie Nunn's Sex Education launched on Netflix in January 2019 and ran for four seasons through 2023, becoming one of the most successful UK-produced commissions on the platform. Nunn had been a writers'-room hire on a small number of British dramas before this; Sex Education was her first show as creator and head writer, an unusually clean credit for a British showrunner at a streamer.
The cast (Asa Butterfield, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Aimee Lou Wood, Connor Swindells, Mimi Keene and Gillian Anderson) propelled multiple actors into wider visibility. Gatwa would go on to play the Doctor in Doctor Who; Mackey starred in Greta Gerwig's Barbie; Wood took an Olivier-winning role on the West End stage. The series was nominated for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Drama Series in 2020 and earned multiple BAFTA-Cymru and Royal Television Society nominations across its run.
The show was shot at the University of South Wales Caerleon campus, whose dilapidated 1960s buildings stood in for the fictional Moordale Secondary School. The deliberately mid-Atlantic visual style (letterman jackets in a small Welsh town) became one of the show's signatures and was widely written about as a marker of the streaming era's tendency toward geographically ambiguous British production. Nunn closed the show with a planned four-season arc rather than allowing it to extend further, an unusual decision in the streamer-volume era.
