The Road to Guantanamo
Three British Muslims travel to Pakistan for a wedding, cross into Afghanistan days before the US invasion, and spend the next two years in the cages of Guantanamo Bay. Winterbottom's docu-drama reconstruction of the 'Tipton Three' ordeal, raw, propulsive, essential.
About
Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross' The Road to Guantánamo won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival 2006 (a shared prize between the two directors. The film opened simultaneously on Channel 4 in the UK, in cinemas through Roadside Attractions in the U.S., on DVD, and as a free download on Bittorrent) one of the earliest experiments by a major commercial production with simultaneous-multi-platform release, which Winterbottom and the production company Revolution Films had pushed for explicitly to maximise the political impact of the material.
The film reconstructs the experiences of the so-called Tipton Three, Asif Iqbal, Ruhal Ahmed and Shafiq Rasul, three British Muslims from Tipton in the West Midlands who were captured in Afghanistan in November 2001 and held without charge at the U.S. military prison at Guantánamo Bay until their release in March 2004. The three returned to the UK and gave detailed first-person testimony to the production team across many months of pre-production interviews. The men themselves appear in the film in interview segments alongside the dramatised reconstructions; the actors playing the younger versions are Riz Ahmed (his feature debut), Farhad Harun and Arfan Usman.
The film became one of the most-watched political documentaries of its decade in the UK, and its Bittorrent release alone generated over 750,000 downloads in the first month. It was also one of the central inputs to subsequent legal proceedings around the U.S. military's detention practices; clips were referenced in U.S. Congressional hearings and in U.K. parliamentary debate. Riz Ahmed has cited the role as the foundation of his subsequent career, which would extend through Four Lions, Nightcrawler, Sound of Metal and his Oscar-nominated work.
