The Class of '92

The Class of '92 was released in December 2013 and was made by the brothers Ben and Gabe Turner, whose company Fulwell 73 would go on to make Sunderland 'Til I Die. It brings together, for the first time on screen, the six Manchester United academy graduates who became the spine of Sir Alex Ferguson's side through the 1990s.

The film reunites David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary and Phil Neville, and follows them from the 1992 FA Youth Cup through their breakthrough into the first team, a group of local and near-local boys who grew up together and stayed together at the same club. The Turners' distinctive move is to set the football against the decade around it: Britpop, the rise of the Premier League, Tony Blair and the changing face of Manchester, with contributions from figures outside the game, including Danny Boyle and Tony Blair himself. The players' conversations with each other, easy, teasing and loyal, are the film's best material.

It is a warm, unashamedly celebratory film, and its value now is partly historical: a portrait of a model of club loyalty and youth development that the modern game has largely abandoned. It is the natural starting point for anyone who goes on to Beckham, which covers some of the same years from a single, closer vantage point.
