A Hero
قهرمان
Rahim is in debtors' prison in Shiraz, out on a two-day furlough to negotiate with the creditor who put him there. His girlfriend has found a handbag full of gold coins. What he decides to do with it turns him, briefly, into a public figure.
About
Asghar Farhadi's ninth feature shared the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2021 with Juho Kuosmanen's Compartment No. 6, and continued the run of Iranian-French co-productions that has kept his work in European cinemas since A Separation. It was shot in Shiraz, a city Farhadi had not filmed in before, with Amir Jadidi in the lead.
Rahim owes money to his former brother-in-law and is serving time for it. Given two days' leave, he finds himself holding a bag of gold coins that would nearly cover the debt, and makes a decision that a local charity, a television programme and eventually the prison authorities all want to publicise. Farhadi's method is unchanged and still remarkable: a moral problem set up so precisely that every subsequent scene narrows the space in which anyone can behave well.
The film ran into a plagiarism dispute at home that overshadowed some of its reception, and reviewers were split on whether Farhadi is repeating himself. What is not in dispute is the construction. As a study of how a good deed becomes a public-relations asset and then a liability, it is the most contemporary thing he has made, and it sits naturally beside The Salesman in the catalogue.
