Drops of God
Les Gouttes de Dieu
When a celebrated French oenologist dies, his estate and vast wine collection are left not to his daughter Camille — a young Parisian who has largely rejected wine — but to whoever can identify three legendary bottles he has described in poetic riddles. The competition draws Camille into the world she abandoned and pits her against Issei Tomine, a brilliant Japanese sommelier her father secretly mentored.
About
Created by Quoc Dang Tran and directed by Oded Ruskin, Drops of God premiered on Apple TV+ on 21 April 2023. The series is an adaptation of the acclaimed manga Les Gouttes de Dieu by Tadashi Agi and Shu Okimoto, a work that became a genuine cultural phenomenon in both France and Japan after its publication from 2004. The production is a rare true bilateral co-production between French and Japanese companies — backed by Legendary Entertainment, 22h22, and France Télévisions — and was filmed simultaneously in both languages with two separate principal casts sharing a single story.
Fleur Geffrier plays Camille Léger, daughter of the late oenologist Alexandre Léger, a woman who has deliberately built a life away from her father's obsessive world of grand cru Burgundy and first-growth Bordeaux. Her rival in the inheritance contest is Issei Tomine (Tomohisa Yamashita), a meticulously trained Tokyo sommelier whose relationship with the elder Léger was far closer than Camille knew. The eight-episode first season builds its suspense through the discipline of sensory description — each episode's wine identification sequence is constructed with the rigour of a procedural — and around the accumulating emotional weight of a father's obscured legacy.
Drops of God won the International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series in November 2024, making it the first Apple TV+ series to win the prize. The series was renewed for a second season, which premiered in January 2026. It stands as one of the more formally adventurous prestige dramas of recent European television, bringing a distinctly literary approach to a subject rarely treated with this degree of seriousness on screen.
