La Cérémonie
A wealthy provincial family hires a quiet, efficient new housekeeper who conceals a shameful secret: she cannot read. When she befriends a brash, prying village postmistress with a grudge against the bourgeoisie, the two women's resentment of their employers festers — and curdles, with chilling calm, toward catastrophe.
About
Often hailed as the finest film of Claude Chabrol's late career, La Cérémonie (1995) won its two leads a shared Best Actress award at Venice and reaffirmed the New Wave veteran as the great French anatomist of class and the murderous undercurrents of bourgeois life. Adapted from a Ruth Rendell novel, it is a study in social dread.
Sandrine Bonnaire plays the impassive, illiterate maid and Isabelle Huppert the malicious postmistress whose friendship emboldens them both, against the comfortable, oblivious family that employs the former. Chabrol directs with cool precision, observing the small humiliations and condescensions of class with a clinical eye while a sense of impending violence accumulates beneath the placid surface. He named class resentment itself as the film's true subject — what he called the last Marxist film.
Critics regarded it as a masterpiece of suspense and social observation, and the Huppert–Bonnaire pairing as one of the great screen duos of the decade. Chilly, controlled and quietly terrifying, La Cérémonie turns a domestic arrangement into a powder keg, dissecting the violence latent in inequality. It is essential Chabrol — Hitchcockian craft married to a distinctly French fascination with the cruelties of the well-bred. The Huppert–Bonnaire pairing is among the great screen duos of the decade, and Chabrol's clinical dissection of class resentment confirmed him, late in his career, as French cinema's foremost anatomist of bourgeois cruelty.
