La Mesías

Javier Calvo & Javier Ambrossi · Spain · 2023

A man encounters a viral video of a five-sister Christian-pop act called Stella Maris and recognises something terrible from his own childhood. Over seven episodes Los Javis trace a Spanish family through cult, abuse, faith and the slow refusal of what it produced — one of the most acclaimed Spanish series of recent years.

About

Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi's La Mesías launched on Movistar+ in October 2023 and won the Premio Feroz for Best Drama Series in 2024 alongside multiple further Feroz wins. The series consolidated Los Javis — the Spanish television creator-director duo previously best known for Veneno, the trans-life biographical series that had become a major Spanish cultural event in 2020 — as one of the most distinctive contemporary Spanish prestige-television collaborations.

The series follows two adult siblings — Enric (Roger Casamajor) and his sister Irene (Macarena García) — across the contemporary present-day timeline, intercut with extended flashback chapters to their childhood and adolescence in a fundamentalist religious household run by their mother Montserrat (Lola Dueñas, in a career-defining performance). When Enric encounters a viral video of a five-sister Christian-pop act called Stella Maris on social media, the recognition of something from his own childhood opens up the seven-episode series's investigative-and-emotional structure.

The series operates simultaneously as family chronicle, contemporary Spanish cultural-religious-political document, and study of how religious-fundamentalist family environments process inheritance across generations. The performances of Dueñas, García and Ana Rujas (as the elder of the Stella Maris sisters) anchor the series's continuing reception. Los Javis's commitment to a register of mature emotional realism marked a significant evolution from their earlier Veneno work.
