Querer

Querer is the first television series created and directed by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, who arrived with the considerable goodwill of Cinco lobitos (2022), the debut feature that won her the Goya for Best New Director. Produced for Movistar Plus+ in collaboration with Kowalski Films and Feelgood Media, the four-part series premiered in 2024 and was written by Ruiz de Azúa with Eduard Sola and Júlia de Paz.

The premise is stark: after three decades of marriage, Miren leaves home and accuses her husband of years of abuse within it. The accusation splits the family, with the couple's two adult sons pulled in opposite directions, and the series follows the resulting fracture both inside the household and through the machinery of a court case. Set largely in the Basque Country and performed partly in Basque, it is anchored by Nagore Aranburu's central performance and a finely judged ensemble that refuses easy villains or victims.

What distinguishes Querer is its restraint. Ruiz de Azúa resists melodrama, building instead through silence, hesitation and the unbearable difficulty of believing — or doubting — the people closest to us. Widely acclaimed on release, it confirmed her as one of the most assured dramatists working in Spanish television, and demonstrated that the patient, humane register of Cinco lobitos could expand to carry one of the most charged subjects of the moment.
