Ragnarok

Ragnarok is a Norwegian-language Netflix original developed by Adam Price, the Danish creator of the political drama Borgen. It premiered in early 2020 and ran for three seasons through 2023, set entirely in the small fictional western Norwegian town of Edda, shot on location in Odda in Hardanger, where the steep fjord landscape doubles as the mythic backdrop the show needs.

The series belongs to the small but distinctive group of Scandinavian Netflix shows produced for international audiences while retaining their original-language identity, alongside The Rain and Young Wallander. Its core cast includes David Stakston, Jonas Strand Gravli, Herman Tømmeraas and Theresa Frostad Eggesbø; Henriette Steenstrup and Gísli Örn Garðarsson play the older generation. The narrative reframes Norse mythology as climate-crisis allegory: the giants are reimagined as an industrialist family poisoning the fjord, a framing taken directly from Norway's long-running political conflict over heavy industry in fjord regions like Sunndalsøra and Odda.

The show is shot in Norwegian, dubbed and subtitled into more than thirty languages by Netflix's localisation team, and the dub-versus-sub debate around the series became its own minor internet subgenre. Like most Netflix originals it lacks a major awards footprint but accumulated a substantial international viewership over its three-season run; in the streamer's own end-of-year non-English top-ten reports, it placed in the top fifteen during multiple weeks of its launches.
