About

Baltasar Kormákur's Trapped (Icelandic: Ófærð) launched on RÚV (the Icelandic national broadcaster) in December 2015 and was acquired by Netflix and BBC Four for international distribution shortly afterwards, becoming one of the central works of the so-called Nordic noir wave alongside The Killing, The Bridge and Borgen. The series ran for three seasons through 2022, with the third season retitled Entrapped for its international release.

Kormákur, Iceland's most internationally prominent director, having made Jar City (2006) and The Deep (2012) before taking on Hollywood productions including Contraband, 2 Guns and Everest, created the series and directed multiple episodes himself across the first two seasons. The series was the most expensive Icelandic-language production ever made at the time of its release, with the first season alone reportedly costing over six million euros, an unusual scale for Iceland's small commercial-television market. The Icelandic government's commissioning support for the show was an explicit policy intervention to extend Iceland's relatively new prominence as an international location-shooting destination.

The cast is led by Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, the most internationally recognisable Icelandic actor of his generation; the supporting cast includes Ilmur Kristjánsdóttir, Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson and Bjarne Henriksen. The first season was shot largely on location in Siglufjörður, a small fjord-bordered fishing town on Iceland's northern coast, across actual Icelandic winter conditions over three months of production. Cinematography is by Bergsteinn Björgúlfsson. The series is now widely cited in academic discussions of small-nation television commissioning strategies.
