The Bridge
Broen / Broen
When a body is found precisely on the border between Denmark and Sweden on the Øresund Bridge, detectives from both countries must work together. Sofia Helin's Saga Norén (cool, precise, and possibly on the autism spectrum) is one of television's most compelling creations.
About
Hans Rosenfeldt's The Bridge (Danish/Swedish: Broen/Bron) launched on DR1 and SVT1 simultaneously in autumn 2011 and ran for four seasons through 2018, becoming one of the defining works of the so-called Nordic noir wave alongside The Killing and Wallander. It won the BAFTA TV Award for Best International Programme in 2014 and the International Emmy for Best Drama Series the same year.
The lead, Sofia Helin, plays Saga Norén, a character widely treated as one of the most influential portrayals of an autistic-coded detective in twenty-first-century television, alongside her male predecessors and the later Astrid: Murder in Paris. Across the four seasons Helin appeared opposite three different male partners, played by Kim Bodnia (Danish; seasons one and two), Thure Lindhardt (Danish; seasons three and four). The show's commitment to bilingual Danish/Swedish dialogue (characters speaking their own language while understanding the other) is one of the elements most cited in academic writing on the series.
The Øresund Bridge, the actual eight-kilometre bridge-and-tunnel structure that connects Copenhagen with Malmö, opened to traffic in 2000; The Bridge made it one of the most visually identifiable European infrastructure projects in international television. The format was remade as a U.S./Mexican border procedural (FX, 2013-2014), as The Tunnel for the Channel/Sky/Canal+ co-production (2013-2018, Channel/UK and France), and as Mar de fueg for Brazilian and Argentine markets, making it one of the most exported Nordic scripted formats of the past two decades.
