Real Humans
Äkta människor
In a near-present Sweden where humanoid robots called hubots have become commonplace domestic helpers, a suburban family takes one home for the first time. A renegade band of self-aware hubots, meanwhile, has begun moving across the country.
About
Real Humans (Äkta människor) is a two-season Swedish science-fiction drama created by Lars Lundström for SVT, which broadcast its twenty episodes between January 2012 and March 2014. Conceived years before the global wave of generative-AI anxiety, the series asked what a fully built-out consumer-robotics industry would mean for ordinary Scandinavian family life, labour markets, sexuality, religious belief and immigration politics. It is generally credited as the first European prestige series to take domestic AI seriously as dramatic terrain, and its international format rights were sold to AMC and Channel 4, which co-produced the English-language remake Humans with Kudos in 2015.
Harald Hamrell directed the first season alongside Levan Akin; Hamrell continued into the second. The ensemble cast covers two parallel registers: an ordinary suburban Engman household whose lives are reorganised by a hubot named Anita (Lisette Pagler), and a small group of conscious, free hubots led by Leo (Andreas Wilson) and Mimi attempting to remain undetected. The production designers and costume team led by Anna Asp gave the hubots a deliberately uncanny stillness that became one of the show's signatures and was preserved in the English-language remake.
The series won the Prix Europa in 2012 for Best European TV Drama and prompted extended critical pieces in The Guardian, Sight & Sound and Wired. Äkta människor remains the most ambitious work of original speculative drama yet produced for Swedish public television.
