Modus

Modus is a two-season Swedish thriller commissioned by TV4 and produced by Miso Film between 2015 and 2017, adapted from the novels of Norwegian writer Anne Holt. The production paired Holt's psychologically careful source material with the international thriller scale that had become commercially viable for Nordic broadcasters after the global success of The Bridge and The Killing. Lisa Farzaneh and Mani Maserrat directed the first season; Lisa Siwe and Mani Maserrat returned for the second.

Melinda Kinnaman plays Inger Johanne Vik, a Swedish psychologist and former FBI behavioural analyst who has retreated from American casework into Stockholm academia, and Henrik Norlén plays Ingvar Nyman, the Stockholm detective who reluctantly invites her into a homicide enquiry that touches her own family. The first season weaves an investigation through the city's evangelical Christian community; the second pivots to a state-visit thriller centred on the kidnapping of the visiting American president (played by Kim Cattrall) and shifts much of the dialogue into English. Krister Henriksson, of the Swedish Wallander series, joins the cast in a substantial supporting role.

The series sold widely in continental Europe and to the BBC in the UK; the BBC4 broadcast in 2016 attracted strong audiences for its winter Saturday-night slot. Critics noted the precision of Kinnaman's performance and the unusual willingness to centre a Nordic-noir lead who is a working mother and academic rather than a damaged detective.
