The middle film of Aki Kaurismäki's Finland trilogy, between Drifting Clouds and Lights in the Dusk, and the one that took him furthest: the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2002, Best Actress for Kati Outinen, and an Academy Award nomination he declined to attend on political grounds. It remains the most decorated Finnish film ever made.
Markku Peltola plays a man who arrives in Helsinki, is attacked, and comes round without a name or a history. What follows is Kaurismäki's usual method — deadpan framing, primary colours, characters who state their circumstances flatly and then get on with things — applied to a premise that could have been maudlin in anyone else's hands. The container village by the docks, its residents, the rockabilly on the jukebox and the Salvation Army band that improves under new management are all played completely straight, which is why they are funny.
Critics treated it as the summation of his style rather than a departure from it, and audiences who had found the earlier films forbidding tended to start here. Timo Salminen's photography gives the poverty an almost Sirkian richness, and Outinen's Irma — watchful, unhurried, funnier than the script strictly requires — is the reason the romance lands. A film about destitution that manages to be genuinely warm without ever once asking for sympathy.
