Film★ Editor's Pick
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
4 luni, 3 săptămâni și 2 zile
In Communist Romania, a university student helps her roommate arrange an illegal abortion, and over the course of a single night, the full weight of state control over women's bodies becomes unbearable. Mungiu's Palme d'Or winner is one of the most suffocating films of its decade.
About
Cristian Mungiu's 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days won the Palme d'Or at Cannes 2007, beating among others the Coen Brothers' No Country for Old Men. It became the defining work of the Romanian New Wave (alongside Cristi Puiu's The Death of Mr Lazarescu and Corneliu Porumboiu's 12:08 East of Bucharest) a movement defined by long static takes, banal settings, and an unflinching interest in the moral cost of late-Ceaușescu life.
The film unfolds over a single day and night in 1987, as university student Otilia (a remarkable Anamaria Marinca) helps her roommate Găbița arrange and undergo an illegal abortion in a provincial Romanian hotel. The infamous fixed-camera dinner-party scene, in which Otilia sits trapped at her boyfriend's family table while Găbița is alone in danger, lasts almost ten minutes and contains some of the most unbearable suspense in 21st-century cinema.
Mungiu refuses every conventional dramatic relief: there is no score, no flashback, no editorial signposting. The horror is administrative, transactional, and grindingly real. The film won the European Film Award for Best Film and was widely cited as a watershed for European art cinema's engagement with state oppression's intimate textures. Marinca's performance (withholding, watchful, finally exhausted) remains the film's quiet centre.
Why it's an Editor's Pick: One of the great single-night films, and the most disciplined account of how authoritarianism colonises the body in recent European cinema. Almost twenty years on, no film about reproductive rights has matched its restraint or its rage.
