Bad Sisters

Sharon Horgan · Ireland / UK · 2022

The five Garvey sisters of Dublin are bound by an unshakeable promise to protect each other from harm. When Grace's controlling husband JP turns up dead, an insurance investigation begins probing the circumstances of his death, and the sisters' tightly held secrets begin to surface. A Sharon Horgan-led black comedy adapted from the Belgian series Clan, weaving together two timelines: the sisters' increasingly desperate attempts to free Grace from JP, and the present-day investigation that threatens to undo them all.

About

Sharon Horgan's Bad Sisters launched on Apple TV+ in August 2022, developed by Horgan with American showrunners Dave Finkel and Brett Baer for her Merman production company in association with ABC Signature. It is an English-language adaptation of the 2012 Flemish series Clan, created by Malin-Sarah Gozin, transposed from a Belgian setting to the Dublin of Horgan's own upbringing. A second season followed in November 2024, also produced and led by Horgan.

The Garvey sisters (Sharon Horgan as Eva, Anne-Marie Duff as Grace, Eva Birthistle as Ursula, Sarah Greene as Bibi and Eve Hewson as Becka) are five Dublin women bound by their parents' early death and a fierce mutual protectiveness. Claes Bang plays Grace's husband John Paul, an emotionally controlling figure whose grip on Grace and her daughter alarms her sisters. The series braids two timelines: the months in which the sisters attempt to extricate Grace from her marriage, and a present-day insurance investigation led by brothers Thomas and Matthew Claffin, played by Brian Gleeson and Daryl McCormack.

Horgan's writing brings her usual register of caustic Irish family comedy together with thriller mechanics and an unusually sharp anatomy of coercive control. The series won Best Drama Series at the 2023 BAFTAs alongside a Peabody Award, and the central five-handed performance, sustained across both seasons, has been singled out as one of the most committed ensemble pieces of recent prestige television.
