Netflix's first German-language original series, set in the fictional town of Winden where the disappearance of two children in 2019 tears open a conspiracy spanning four interconnected families across multiple centuries. Across three seasons the series unfolds a mind-bending mythology of time travel, wormholes, and predestination paradoxes, revealing how the fates of each family are inextricably knotted through time.
About
Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese's Dark launched in December 2017 as Netflix's first German-language original series, and across three seasons (2017-2020) became the most ambitious genre-fiction television project to come out of German-speaking Europe. The series ran for 26 episodes, all written, directed and produced by Bo Odar and Friese, with the unusual freedom of a clearly defined endpoint. It won the Adolf Grimme-Preis for Best Fiction Series in 2018.
The fictional town of Winden, with its disused nuclear power plant and a network of caves, becomes the focal point for a conspiracy that interlaces four families across 33-year intervals, 1888, 1921, 1953, 1986, 2019, 2052. The disappearance of two boys triggers a slow uncovering of the town's central mystery, told through one of the most intricately structured plots in the history of television. Louis Hofmann's central performance as Jonas Kahnwald carries the emotional weight; the ensemble across multiple time periods is uniformly strong.
The show found its English-speaking audience via subtitles and dubs, and entered a small group (alongside The Leftovers and Twin Peaks: The Return) that proved serialised television could sustain genuinely metaphysical ambitions. The third season's resolution divided audiences but no critic disputed its formal integrity.
Why it's an Editor's Pick: The most rigorous serialised mystery on television since the original Lost, made with a clarity of purpose that streaming platforms have rarely allowed since. A high-water mark for German-language drama in the streaming era.
