Hannu Salonen's Oderbruch launched on ARD in February 2024 as one of the year's most-discussed German prestige-television productions. The eight-episode series consolidated Salonen, a Finnish-German director with substantial Scandinavian and Central-European prestige drama credits, as one of the most internationally consequential German-language television directors of his generation.

A series of brutal murders is uncovered in the remote Oderbruch region on the German-Polish border, a marshy lowland area along the Oder River that has been continuously contested across the broader twentieth-century geographical-political reorganisations. Detective Roland Voit (Karoline Schuch in the lead, with Lucas Gregorowicz as the senior local detective) returns to her hometown to lead the investigation, alongside Polish officer Stanislaw Zarewicz from the cross-border Polish counterpart agency. The series follows the investigation across the border-spanning environment.

The series operates as procedural crime thriller with substantial integration of the actual contemporary German-Polish-border political-cultural environment, the ongoing migration questions, the broader EU-border-management practices, the historical-cultural specificity of the Oderbruch region. Sebastian Edschmid's photography of the actual marshland environment, the small German-border-town interiors, and the broader continuing geographic specificity produced a register that has been widely cited as one of the most-distinctive recent works of German-language genre television.
