Suburra: Blood on Rome
Suburra - La serie
Three young men from Rome's criminal underworld (a hustler, a gangster's nephew, and an aristocrat's son) form an alliance to claim their piece of a massive real estate deal that implicates Vatican money and corrupt politicians. The prequel to the film, with its own brooding identity.
About
Suburra: Blood on Rome (Italian: Suburra - La serie) was the first Italian-language Netflix original series, commissioned in 2015 and released in October 2017 across three series and twenty-four episodes through 2020. The show was developed by Daniele Cesarano and Barbara Petronio, drawing on the world of Stefano Sollima's 2015 feature film Suburra, which had itself adapted the bestselling 2013 novel by Giancarlo De Cataldo and Carlo Bonini.
The directing credit is shared across the run: Andrea Molaioli (best known for The Girl by the Lake) directed the first series; Piero Messina and Andrea Molaioli directed the second; Arnaldo Catinari directed the third. The cast is led by Alessandro Borghi, Giacomo Ferrara and Eduardo Valdarnini, with Filippo Nigro, Adamo Dionisi and Claudia Gerini in support; the production used real Roman locations including Ostia, the Magliana area, and Vatican-adjacent neighbourhoods, with on-location shooting permitted at sensitive sites Italian productions rarely access.
The show was a commercial success in over thirty countries on Netflix's international markets and contributed significantly to the streamer's investment in Italian production through the late 2010s. Borghi would go on to lead Stefano Sollima's ZeroZeroZero, Sergio Corbucci's The Eight Mountains and several major international films; the series remains the most prominent Italian title in Netflix's catalogue from the period before The Law According to Lidia Poët and Il Gattopardo.
