Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man
The feature-length continuation of Steven Knight's Peaky Blinders picks up the Shelby family's story from the close of the television series and carries it into the Second World War. Cillian Murphy returns as Tommy Shelby, with Tom Harper, who directed the first series of the show back in 2013, behind the camera for a Netflix-produced feature that brings the saga into the 1940s.
About
Steven Knight's Peaky Blinders television series ran for six series on BBC Two between 2013 and 2022 and concluded with the explicit promise of a feature film to come. The Immortal Man is that film, written by Knight, directed by Tom Harper (who directed the first series of the show in 2013), and produced for Netflix. Cillian Murphy returns to the role of Tommy Shelby for the first time since the series finale, alongside a cast that includes Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan, Stephen Graham and Tim Roth, with Sophie Rundle reprising Ada Shelby.
The film moves the Shelby chronology forward into the Second World War, the era the series had begun to gesture toward in its final episodes. Knight has said in interviews that the feature was designed from the outset as the resolution of arcs the television series did not have time to close, rather than as a standalone story. The production was filmed across Birmingham and the surrounding country in 2024, returning to many of the locations the television series used over its decade-long run.
For Murphy, the role marks a return to Tommy Shelby after his 2024 Academy Award for Best Actor for Oppenheimer. The combination of Murphy at the height of his international profile, Knight scripting his own long-running creation, and Netflix's distribution scale gives The Immortal Man an unusual position: a continuation of a defining piece of 21st-century British television, made for a global streaming audience and with the budget of a major feature film.
