About

Quicksand (Störst av allt) was Sweden's first Netflix original series, premiering globally in April 2019. Adapted from Malin Persson Giolito's prize-winning 2016 novel of the same name by screenwriter Camilla Ahlgren — best known internationally as the lead writer of The Bridge — the six-episode limited series was directed by Norwegian filmmaker Per-Olav Sørensen for FLX. It was the first major test of whether Sweden's prestige-drama infrastructure could deliver a streaming-native production at the scale Netflix expected, and the launch generated unusually broad coverage for a Nordic-language commission.

Hanna Ardéhn, then twenty-three, plays Maja Norberg, a teenager from one of Stockholm's wealthiest enclaves now on remand in a Swedish young-offender facility, awaiting trial for the shooting at her school. The structure cuts between her interviews with detectives and her defence counsel and the year preceding the event, in which her relationship with classmate Sebastian (Felix Sandman) and his magnetically wealthy, addicted father (David Dencik) shapes her life. Sørensen's direction holds the courtroom and the suburban-villa scenes in the same low-saturation register — a deliberate equalisation of two worlds the audience is invited to read against each other.

Persson Giolito is a practising lawyer and the daughter of the Swedish writer Leif G. W. Persson, and the legal procedure depicted in the trial carries the weight of accurate practice. Quicksand won the Kristallen 2019 award for Best Swedish TV Drama and is now widely cited as a turning point in Swedish public attention to school violence and class.
