Bordertown

Bordertown (Sorjonen in the original Finnish) is the highest-budget Finnish drama series produced for Yle, the country's public broadcaster. Created by Miikko Oikkonen and produced by Fisher King, it ran for three seasons of thirty-one episodes between 2016 and 2020 and was acquired by Netflix for international distribution, becoming the first Finnish-language series to find a substantial global audience. Its commissioning came at the height of European interest in Nordic noir, but the setting on the Karelian border with Russia gives it a distinct geopolitical undertow that sets it apart from its Swedish and Danish counterparts.

Ville Virtanen, a veteran of Aki Kaurismäki's stock company and one of Finland's most recognisable screen actors, plays Kari Sorjonen, a savant-like detective with synaesthesia-adjacent visual instincts that allow him to reconstruct crime scenes in his head. The premise — a Helsinki investigator moves his family to provincial Lappeenranta to be closer to a daughter recovering from a brain tumour — provides the spine for serialised cases that unfold across the cross-border traffic of people, money and contraband flowing between the EU and the Russian Federation. Matleena Kuusniemi and Anu Sinisalo play the colleagues who form his small unit. Cinematographer Pini Hellstedt shoots the lake-and-forest landscapes of South Karelia with the muted palette the genre now demands.

Critics in Variety and The Guardian placed Bordertown among the strongest non-anglophone procedurals of the late 2010s, and it has been credited with opening the door for further Finnish-language exports to streaming platforms. A 2021 feature-length spin-off, Sorjonen — Muraani, followed the third season's conclusion.
