Run Lola Run
Lola rennt
Lola has 20 minutes to raise 100,000 marks and save her boyfriend's life, then the same 20 minutes play out again, and again, each time with radically different outcomes. Tykwer's kinetic, pulsating chase film redefined what German cinema could look and feel like.
About
Tom Tykwer's Run Lola Run exploded at Sundance in early 1999 (winning the Audience Award) and went on to become one of the best-selling foreign-language films at the American box office that year, taking over $7 million on a tiny budget. It also won the German Film Award for Best Feature Film and is now the rare 1990s German film, alongside Wolfgang Petersen's Das Boot, that crossed into mass international recognition.
Franka Potente plays the lead and the role launched her into a brief but intense Hollywood period, she would appear in The Bourne Identity and its sequel within four years. Moritz Bleibtreu plays opposite her; the supporting cast includes Herbert Knaup and Joachim Król. Cinematography is by Frank Griebe, Tykwer's regular collaborator since the early 1990s. The kinetic electronic score, written by Tykwer with Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek, was central to the film's appeal and was released as one of the best-selling soundtrack albums in German chart history.
The structural conceit (three consecutive runs of the same twenty minutes) was widely imitated and discussed in academic literature on narrative form for years afterwards, often paired with Sliding Doors from the previous year and Memento two years later as part of the late-1990s revival of nonlinear storytelling. Tykwer would go on to direct Cloud Atlas, Babylon Berlin and the long-anticipated The Light in 2025, but Lola remains the film he is most associated with.
