The Gentlemen
Mickey Pearson is an American expat who's quietly built a marijuana empire inside the crumbling stately homes of the English aristocracy. When he decides to cash out, every rival, Russian oligarch, and tabloid stringer in London smells an opening. Guy Ritchie's return to his Cockney-crime comfort zone is played out like a dinner-table anecdote by Hugh Grant's sleazy journalist, a storytelling device that lets Ritchie indulge every switchback and verbal pyrotechnic he knows.
About
Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen opened in early 2020 and grossed over $115 million worldwide on a budget of approximately $22 million, becoming Ritchie's most commercially successful original (non-franchise) feature since the early 2000s. The film led directly to a 2024 Netflix television series of the same name, also created and partly directed by Ritchie, which extended the world but with a largely new cast.
The film is essentially Ritchie's late-career return to the British-criminal mode of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch and RocknRolla after a decade of major-studio work on the Sherlock Holmes sequels, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., the live-action Aladdin and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. The cast represents an unusual mix: Matthew McConaughey in his second post-True Detective-era major star vehicle, alongside Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle Dockery, Jeremy Strong (his first major film role after Succession's first season), Eddie Marsan, Hugh Grant and Colin Farrell.
The screenplay is by Ritchie with Marn Davies and Ivan Atkinson (Atkinson serving as Ritchie's regular co-writer through the 2020s. Cinematography is by Alan Stewart and the score is by Christopher Benstead. The Netflix series in 2024) directed in part by Ritchie himself, extended the property into a separate fictional universe with Theo James and Kaya Scodelario in the leads, and was renewed for a second season early in 2025.
