Gomorrah

Gomorra - La serie

Stefano Sollima · Italy · 2014

In the concrete towers of Secondigliano, two men orbit the same Camorra clan and the same ambition. Ciro Di Marzio is the boss's most trusted enforcer. Genny Savastano is the boss's untested son. Over five seasons their alliance curdles into a war that pulls in everyone around them, wives, rivals, politicians, and an entire city that runs on the economy of organised crime. Created by Roberto Saviano from his own bestselling exposé, the series strips away every trace of mob glamour and replaces it with a world of fluorescent-lit stairwells, surveillance cameras, and the terrible intimacy of violence between people who grew up together.

About

Stefano Sollima's Gomorrah (the series, distinct from Garrone's 2008 film) launched on Sky Italia in May 2014, six years after Matteo Garrone's earlier feature adaptation. The series ran for five seasons until 2021 and became the most internationally exported piece of contemporary Italian prestige television. The series was developed by Sollima with Roberto Saviano (the original book author) and screenwriters Leonardo Fasoli and Maddalena Ravagli, and consolidated the Naples-Camorra-criminal-procedural register as one of the most distinctive in 2010s European prestige drama.

In the concrete tower-blocks of Secondigliano in northern Naples, two men orbit the same Camorra clan and the same ambition: Ciro Di Marzio (Marco D'Amore), the boss's most trusted enforcer, an orphan raised by the clan; and Genny Savastano (Salvatore Esposito), the boss's untested young son who is gradually taking on adult responsibilities. Fortunato Cerlino plays the central boss Don Pietro Savastano; Maria Pia Calzone plays his wife Imma. The series follows the slow accumulation of internal-clan conflict across five seasons.

The series's commitment to an actual Neapolitan-language register (most of the dialogue is performed in Neapolitan dialect with Italian subtitles for the broader Italian audience), to filming on actual Camorra-clan housing blocks, and to a procedural-realist approach to organised-crime business mechanics produced a register that has continued to influence European prestige drama through the present. D'Amore and Esposito's central pairing is one of the most consistently committed of recent European television.
