About
Gangs of London launched on Sky Atlantic in April 2020 across nine episodes and became one of Sky's most-watched original commissions of that year, with over 2.2 million viewers per episode in the UK. The series was developed by Gareth Evans and Matt Flannery, the writer-director and cinematographer of The Raid (2011) and The Raid 2 (2014) — Evans's Indonesian action films that had become cult reference points for action cinema globally. Gangs of London was their first long-form television commission and their first major UK production.
The cast is led by Joe Cole — known for Peaky Blinders — and Sope Dirisu, with Lucian Msamati, Michelle Fairley, Paapa Essiedu, Pippa Bennett-Warner and Asif Raza Mir in major roles. Cinematography is by Flannery; the action choreography is overseen by Jude Poyer, Evans's regular fight coordinator. The fight sequences became one of the show's most-discussed elements: a single take that runs over six minutes through a butcher's shop, a sustained pub-set sequence with mounted weapons, and a closing-episode siege all built on the long-take action grammar Evans had developed in Jakarta.
The series ran for three seasons through 2025 across Sky Atlantic and AMC's Plus streaming service in the U.S. It was nominated for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Drama Series in 2021 and won several Royal Television Society awards. It is now widely cited alongside Top Boy, Peaky Blinders and The Wire in academic discussions of contemporary urban-criminal television.
