A Beautiful Obsession

Kevin Macdonald has spent a quarter of a century moving between documentary and fiction: an Academy Award for One Day in September, a BAFTA for Touching the Void, and the direction of Forest Whitaker's Oscar-winning performance in The Last King of Scotland. A Beautiful Obsession, co-directed with John De Caux and released by Prime Video in August 2026, brings him back to elite sport, the world that framed his first Oscar, through four episodes on Manchester City.

The series opens with City as English champions for a fourth consecutive season and follows the club into the worst run of form of the Guardiola years. Filmed over two seasons, it has access that club documentaries rarely win: team talks, the medical room, and boardroom conversations about which of the players who built a dynasty should be allowed to leave. Guardiola is the gravitational centre, restless and self-lacerating, with Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri around him. The episodes are short, between 35 and 45 minutes, and favour the dressing room over match highlights.

The series inevitably sits against All or Nothing: Manchester City (2018), Amazon's earlier chronicle of Guardiola's second season at the club. Where that series was a celebration, this one is built around difficulty and ageing, which gives it the texture of Macdonald's portrait films rather than a club-channel production. Macdonald himself has compared filming Guardiola to working with a great screen actor. Early audience response has been strong, and it stands as a document of the end of one of football's defining managerial eras.
