Cunk on Life

Al Campbell · UK · 2024

Philomena Cunk, the world's most confident idiot, sets out to answer the most fundamental question — what is life? — by interviewing a parade of long-suffering scientists, philosophers and historians; Charlie Brooker's deadpan mockumentary character returns for a feature-length special.

About

Al Campbell's Cunk on Life launched on BBC Two in January 2024 and was nominated for multiple BAFTA Television Awards. The seventy-minute special is the latest entry in Charlie Brooker's long-running mockumentary universe around Diane Morgan's character Philomena Cunk — the slow-witted, unwarrantedly confident regional television presenter who first appeared in Brooker's Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe (2013) and has since starred in Cunk on Britain (2018), Cunk on Earth (2022), and ongoing short-form internet content.

The premise — that Cunk has been commissioned to answer the most fundamental question, what is life — sets her loose on a series of patient, real academic interviews with scientists, philosophers and historians, each forced to engage seriously with her gnomic and frequently surreal questions. The interviewees in the film are real (Brian Cox, Daisy Christodoulou, Douglas Hedley, Tom Whyman, Diana Walsh Pasulka), and their good-faith responses to Cunk's lateral, fact-resistant questioning are part of the form's pleasure.

Morgan's performance — entirely committed to Cunk's confused-confidence register, with the absolute deadpan that only the long-Yorkshire-deadpan tradition (Victoria Wood, Reece Shearsmith, the original Knowing Me Knowing You) has previously sustained — has become one of the most distinctive comic creations in 2010s and 2020s British television. The recurring jokes — the appearance of Belgian electronic ballad Pump Up the Jam by Technotronic, the running misuse of the word nominally — function as a small audience-membership shibboleth.
