Machine
A young French woman returns from years in a Special Forces unit and lands a low-wage assembly-line job in a provincial factory. Underneath the routine of shift work, the radicalised politics of the union — and the personal history she is trying to leave behind — start to find each other.
About
Fred Grivois's Machine launched on Arte in March 2024 across six episodes and on Canal+ International in the same window. The series was created by Grivois — a French writer-director with a background in television action work — and Thomas Bourguignon, who had also developed Crimes parfaits for France 2.
The cast is led by Margot Bancilhon as the central protagonist, with JoeyStarr — the rapper of NTM and one of France's most recognisable performers — as her former mentor figure, and Pierre Lottin, Sofia Lesaffre and Mickaël Lumière in supporting roles. Cinematography is by Romain Carcanade, working between the factory-floor industrial register and the fight-choreography sequences that have become a signature of Grivois's work since his earlier features Les Hommes du feu (2017) and La Résistance de l'air (2015).
The series was produced by EuropaCorp Television (the long-running TV arm of Luc Besson's production company before its disposal) and acquired by Netflix for international distribution outside France. It was widely treated by French critics as one of the strongest French scripted series of 2024, alongside Canal+'s Le Bureau des légendes-derived prestige output and the public-broadcast wave around HPI and Astrid.
