Turn of the Tide

Augusto Fraga's Turn of the Tide (Portuguese: Rabo de Peixe) launched on Netflix in May 2023 across seven episodes, became the streamer's most-watched non-English-language original of its launch week, and reached the platform's global non-English top ten in over twenty-five countries during the months following release. It was Netflix's first scripted Portuguese-language original and one of the most internationally visible Portuguese productions of any kind released in the 2020s.

The series is loosely inspired by a real 2001 incident in which a sailboat carrying approximately five tonnes of cocaine washed ashore at Rabo de Peixe on the Azorean island of São Miguel after the smuggler running the cargo abandoned ship. Substantial portions of the cocaine entered local circulation in the Azorean fishing community before authorities recovered the rest, with the resulting wave of addiction and small-scale local crime documented extensively in Portuguese press through the 2000s. The Cannes documentary Rabo de Peixe (2017) by Maya Booth had previously dramatised the same events.

The cast is led by José Condessa, with Helena Caldeira, André Leitão, Rodrigo Tomás, Maria João Bastos and Adriano Carvalho in major supporting roles. Almost all of the cast are native Portuguese speakers from the Azores or mainland Portugal, with extensive Açoriano dialect usage that was subtitled in standard Portuguese for international markets. Cinematography is by Manuel Pinto Barros. A second season was commissioned by Netflix and entered production in 2024 with a planned 2025 release date.
