Män som hatar kvinnor
Disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist is hired by a wealthy industrialist to investigate the decades-old disappearance of his niece from a powerful Swedish family. He teams up with Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant but troubled young hacker, and together they uncover a dark history of violence and corruption hidden within the family's past.
About
Niels Arden Oplev's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Swedish: Män som hatar kvinnor, literally Men Who Hate Women) opened in Sweden in February 2009 and grossed over $104 million worldwide, at the time the highest-grossing Swedish-language film ever made. It won the Guldbagge for Best Film and Best Actress (for Noomi Rapace) at the 2010 Swedish national film awards.
The film is the first of three adaptations of Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy made by Oplev and Daniel Alfredson; Alfredson directed the second (The Girl Who Played with Fire) and third (The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest), both released in 2009. The three Swedish films were originally produced as a six-episode television miniseries totalling roughly nine hours of material, then re-cut into three theatrical features for international release. The Swedish-language productions opened the property to David Fincher's English-language remake (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, 2011, with Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig).
Larsson (a Swedish journalist and editor at Expo magazine) died in November 2004 at the age of fifty, having delivered the manuscripts for the three novels but never seeing them published. The trilogy was published posthumously by Norstedts and went on to sell over a hundred million copies in over fifty languages, becoming one of the bestselling crime-fiction series of the twenty-first century. Rapace's performance in the lead role launched her career across multiple subsequent international productions including Prometheus, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.
