About

Ingmar Bergman's Wild Strawberries (Smultronstället) won the Golden Bear at Berlin in 1958 and was made simultaneously with The Seventh Seal in 1957. Bergman was thirty-eight; the central role of the seventy-eight-year-old Professor Isak Borg was given to Victor Sjöström, then seventy-eight, the legendary silent-era Swedish director (The Phantom Carriage, 1921) whose own work had defined Bergman's earliest cinematic vocabulary. Sjöström would die a year later; Wild Strawberries is his final and definitive screen performance.

An elderly Swedish professor, on the day he is to receive an honorary degree from Lund University, drives from Stockholm to the ceremony with his daughter-in-law Marianne (Ingrid Thulin). En route they pick up three young hitchhikers (one played by Bibi Andersson, in a young echo of the woman the professor loved and lost). Memories, dreams and small confrontations begin to crack the professor's careful self-presentation, and the journey becomes one of the most patient portraits of late-life self-reckoning in cinema.

The opening dream (a clock without hands, a coffin in the street, a hand emerging from the coffin to grip his own) is one of the most frequently cited sequences in psychological cinema. Bergman has said the film was partly about his own emotional coldness toward those who loved him; you can feel that self-reckoning in every frame. Sjöström's final close-up, of the professor falling asleep at peace with himself, is one of the most quietly redemptive shots in Bergman's career.

Why it's an Editor's Pick: The most tender film Bergman ever made, and the rare late-career-self-portrait whose protagonist earns his peace. Sjöström's performance is a foundational cinematic gift from one master to another.
